A Brief History of Summit Heights
In 1959, a group of United Methodists began meeting in the Smyrna Elementary School with the vision of beginning a new church in the Highview area. Rev. Tom Owen was the pastor assigned to the group. At this location, the group grew and was chartered as the Summit Heights United Methodist Church. The thread of God's faithfulness began to be seen in the church's ministry. In 1962, the first building was completed.
A sanctuary, fellowship hall, kitchen, office areas and Sunday School classrooms were included in the two-story building. Rev. Owen continued as pastor through this building project. The thread of God's faithfulness was seen in the ministries of Summit Heights, including a Cub Scout and Webelos program. As Summit Heights continued to grow, a new sanctuary was needed.
Under the leadership of Rev. Gale Wetzel, a committee was formed to work on the building project. Rev. John Weber was appointed after Rev. Wetzel, and the sanctuary project was completed in 1973. The thread of God's faithfulness could be seen in the growing ministries to children and youth. In the late 1990s, a group of people had the vision for another building project to be a base of outreach to our community and increase the Sunday School ministry of Summit Heights. In 2004, the Christian Education Center was completed under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Gene Pillow. The center includes a gym, large kitchen and serving area, and five classrooms on the main level. On the upper level, a large area for youth fellowship was included. Now there are many ministries that reflect the thread of God's faithfulness to Summit Heights. From the youngest to the oldest, the Summit Heights family is growing in their journeys with God.
